Wholemeal Crumpets

Wholemeal crumpets

These are easy to make, but a bit fiddly. I only make them every now on  a weekend when we feel like something different.

 

Ingredients (makes about 16 if you use egg-rings like I did)

1 cup wholemeal bread flour

1 cup plain bread flour

1 tbsp baking powder

2/3 tsp dried yeast

½ tsp bicarb soda

Pinch salt

1 tsp caster sugar

500mL warm water

Butter (for pan and greasing)

Directions

Sift dry ingredients into a mixing bowl and then whisk together thoroughly.

Pour in warm water and whisk until well-mixed.

Heat a non-stick frying pan on a low-medium heat and melt a dab of butter in pan.

Grease some egg rings and place them in the pan.

Pour batter in to tops of egg rings.

Cook until bubbles have appeared on top and the batter on top looks a little set (about 8mins).

Place a lid over the pan and cook for a further 1-2mins (to cook the tops).

Let them cool on a rack.

Toast them before topping with honey (or whatever spread you desire) and eating.

  1. Yum. I love crumpets. I’ve been meaning to make some for a while now but keep forgetting. I even have proper crumpet rings that are a little bit taller than egg rings, so I’ve really got no excuses 😛

    • I really need to get some of those crumpet rings. I can imagine they would be nicer a bit thicker. Mine come out a little flat in the egg rings 😦
